Apple Watch turns inward with a health-first upgrade
Series 12 and Ultra 4 look familiar, but more frequent sensing changes what the watches can understand throughout the day.

Apple’s newest watches make their strongest case through the information they collect, not through a dramatic new shape.
The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 introduce a redesigned Health Sensing System. Larger green LEDs, rearranged photodiodes, and electrodes with more contact area are intended to improve readings without making the sensor assembly larger.
The major practical change is frequency. Earlier models generally sampled background heart rate every five minutes while a wearer was relatively still. The new watches can take a reading every five seconds, including during movement.
From more data to clearer signals
That denser record can capture ordinary moments that previously fell between readings: carrying groceries, working in the yard, responding to stress, or drinking coffee. Heart-rate variability can also be measured as often as every five minutes at rest instead of roughly every two hours.
Apple is using those measurements to expand Vitals beyond its previous overnight report. A daytime view displays heart rate and heart-rate variability, while a four-level scale distinguishes favorable, typical, slightly unusual, and notably unusual readings.
A new Readiness score combines recent activity, training load, sleep, and vital signs. The score uses a simple zero-to-ten range and can change during the day as the watch records new activity, naps, and heart data. It brings Apple closer to the recovery summaries already offered by Oura and Whoop.
Performance supports the sensors
Both watches use Apple’s S11 chip, which includes an always-on processor for continuous workloads. The hardware also supports a redesigned pedometer and future Audio Intelligence functions.
Battery estimates remain 24 hours for Series 12 under normal use. Ultra 4 rises to a claimed 50 hours, and 9to5Mac’s review reached roughly 48 hours while including workouts, time away from the paired iPhone, and two nights of sleep tracking.
The result is a familiar-looking generation with a different priority. Apple is treating the watch less as a screen that happens to track health and more as a continuous health sensor whose software turns frequent measurements into understandable guidance.
